Fate was quick to tear apart these two singing sisters of the 19th century. “La Malibran” led an extraordinary life, tragically cut short by her death at age 28, whereas her younger sister, Pauline Viardot, lived well into her 80s. Celebrated throughout Europe for her exceptional voice and ability to passionately embody roles by Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti, Maria Malibran was the queen of belcanto. Opera fans were stunned by her early passing and the immense void she left behind, yet her legacy has since become immortalized through her sister’s writings.
Also a mezzo-soprano, Pauline Viardot was not only a talented singer and composer, but an influential teacher as well. She also played a key role in spreading the music of composers like Berlioz and Brahms, her contemporaries.
Mezzo-sopranos Karine Deshayes and Delphine Haidan are now taking it upon themselves to remind us of the story and repertoire of their two spiritual sisters in music through an album of works that the two real sisters originally promoted in their own lifetimes: Rossini, Bellini, Gluck, and Berlioz, as well as Saint-Saëns and his forgotten student Clémence de Grandval, writer of over a dozen operas. Further adding to this album’s originality are two little-known arias from operas composed by Pauline Viardot herself.
