This surprisingly coupled album has been released by BR Klassik since the death of Mariss Jansons in December 2019. In Carmen's Suite, a ballet score for strings, timpani and four percussion groups written to the attention of his wife, the ballerina Maya Plisetskaya (1925-2015), the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin transcribed excerpts of Bizet’s music, in striving to get away from it. This work incorporates music from Bizet's opera, plus material from the second L'Arlésienne Suite and La jolie fille de Perth. Throughout this rustic and playful work, the colourful, fiery and rhythmic orchestra gives the feeling of having fun at the same time as Jansons shows his science of conducting. In Respighi, contrary to the sense of over-the-top spectacle of Riccardo Muti, Jansons shows greater restraint, not without creating impressive moments, highlighted by a very good sound recording. © Qobuz

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Scriabin's Flamboyant Raptures

Somewhat overshadowed today by his compatriots Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin is nonetheless a key figure in Russian music. At the beginning of the 20th century, the composer and virtuoso pianist broke away from the Romantic legacy to offer a unique and innovative musical language which no one would follow. His work, deeply influenced by mystical philosophy and synaesthesia, would undergo a dazzling evolution in barely two decades, interrupted by his premature death at the age of 43.

Bernard Haitink, a Prophet in his Own Land

The great Dutch conductor who died recently at the venerable age of 92 proved the old adage wrong. Recognised by his peers throughout his own country from his youth, Bernard Haitink spent most of his vast career in the Netherlands, first conducting the Dutch Radio Orchestra and then the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for 27 years, with whom he made many legendary recordings for PHILIPS, DECCA and EMI CLASSICS, including more than 450 recordings of a wide range of composers, among which Bruckner and Mahler enjoy pride of place.
