Composer Rolf Wallin uses mathematical techniques, especially fractal algorithms, in his work, and he has been compared with such composers as György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis, and Luciano Berio. Hearers here will benefit from the physical CD, where the composer explains some of his techniques in detail, such as the derivation of the final Five Seasons, a concerto for sheng and orchestra, from the five Chinese elements, water, wood, fire, earth, and metal, and their interrelationships and relationships with the seasons. Yet Wallin's work is somehow more accessible than many of those by his predecessors; a general listener asked to make a guess at the mathematical inspirations might easily come up with the fractal idea. Wallin's pieces feel like a force that splits into fragments that sparkle but maintain a pattern; the orchestra gives little flashes rather than providing a base layer as in traditional concertos. The Five Seasons is arguably the work in which this works best, with the sheng, played by Wu Wei, interacting in seemingly infinite ways with the already atomized orchestra. This is not the first Western concerto to feature the sheng, but it may be highly recommended to orchestras aiming to incorporate Chinese elements in their programming. Keeping on top of the constantly shifting textures is a challenging task for conductor Andris Poga and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, and one they dispatch with elegance. Crystal-clear sound from the Stavanger Concert Hall in the hands of Ondine's engineers completes a compelling package.
