Jessica Pratt

Singer/songwriter Jessica Pratt has a gentle, understated style that calls on the spirit of '70s folk introverts, finding a haunted elegance in her subtle yet sublime songs of acoustic guitar and layered, reverb-heavy vocals. She rose to acclaim for her albums with indie labels Drag City and Mexican Summer, and branched out from the hushed folk minimalism of 2019's Quiet Signs to the more ornate, Pet Sounds-inspired arrangements of 2024's Here in the Pitch. Pratt came into the public eye with her 2012 self-titled debut. The album consisted of mostly low-key recordings of Pratt's voice and simple acoustic guitar accompaniment, recalling both obscure psych-folk artists like Sibylle Baier and more well-known stargazing folk-rockers like David Crosby or Joni Mitchell. Based in San Francisco at the time, Pratt's debut was released by her friend Tim Presley of the band White Fence, on a label he started solely to release her music. Some songs had actually been put to tape years earlier, sitting dormant until an album came together around them. The release was instantly taken to by critics and listeners alike, with initial pressings selling out immediately. Pratt went on to earn critical acclaim and bigger audiences, touring around the world on her own and in support of bands like Real Estate and Julia Holter. Her second album, On Your Own Love Again, appeared in January of 2015 on Drag City. After a brief respite, her third and (up to that point) most intricately composed album Quiet Signs, arrived in February of 2019. This time, Pratt worked with the Mexican Summer label and enlisted the help of additional musicians to add piano, synthesizer, and other subtle touches to the album. Her fourth album, Here in the Pitch, arrived in 2024 and represented a marked stylistic shift. While the songs were still largely mellow and unbusy, hints of reverb-soaked percussion, chamber pop instruments, and an otherworldly atmosphere borrowed from the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds all set the album very much apart from the rest of Pratt's work.
