With his movie star good looks, brilliant natural gift for the trumpet, seductive vocals, nomadic lifestyle, addiction to heroin, and dazzling arrest record, Chet Baker was the personification of the James Dean-like jazz bad boy, especially during the conservative Eisenhower years. Born in Yale, Oklahoma in 1929, Baker got his first big break in Los Angeles in 1952 playing and recording with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. He then commenced his own roller coaster career, which included extensive tours of Europe. When he died under mysterious circumstances in Amsterdam in 1988, he left behind a vast discography.
This wonderful compilation collects 14 tracks (nine with vocals) that Baker recorded at his peak in the mid-'50s in Paris and the mid-'60s in New York City. Every track is stunning and shows him at the top of his game. His playing is clear and spacey, yet lyrical. His unique tenor vocals are disarmingly simple and stick close to the melody with just the subtlest variation. Highlights include "Everything Depends on You" with Kenny Burrell on guitar, "Tenderly," and "Exitus."
