Is This It is the very spirit of downtown New York City in the year 2001: laidback and confident, with a pretense of being blasé. It is the sound of a city still naive to terror and the sound of a backlash to the plastic fantastic-ness of the era's mainstream pop culture. The record's Velvet Underground similarities were pegged immediately, especially on songs like "The Modern Age," but singer Julian Casablancas has since admitted to being inspired by Jim Morrison. Casablancas also comes on on like a 1950s crooner: "Someday" conjures the pure romance of The Platters. The guitars are New Wave (exceptionally so on the angular "Alone, Together"), except when Nick Valensi's leads brighten up with a wink at Chuck Berry; Nikolai Fraiture's bass lines are pure punk — high in the mix and vital on "Barely Legal." Is This It is also a dance record, especially "Someday" and "Last Nite" — a song so good Tom Petty let it ride, even though it's a blatant, shall we say, tribute to his "American Girl." By the end, when Casablancas wails "Take It Or Leave It," there's only one right choice. © Qobuz
