A band that leavens its hard-hitting, crashing emo attack with the high, sweet vocals of versatile Chris Patterson and the prog-indebted keys of Mike Spearman, Jamies Elsewhere builds its musical drama from the ground up. The elaborate arrangements on GUIDEBOOK FOR SINNERS TURNED SAINTS owe as much to Rush or Dream Theater as they do to their contemporaries. For variety, the spine-tingling guitar arpeggios of “The End of Innocence" are a haunting calm after the storm, while “The Saint, The Sword, The Savior” uses programmed beats to percolate an otherwise placid ballad. Far from being cookie-cutter, Jamies Elsewhere are playing with all the possibilities here.
