Long ago it became common knowledge that Neil Young—a fan of live albums, having released eight in his solo career since 1973—was building a massive tape library of shows. Like Bob Dylan before him (and Bruce Springsteen after), Young rode herd on a constantly expanding recording library that he first began talking about exploiting in the 1980s.
Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama... In recent years, these popular names have all been grouped under the vast and imprecise label "neoclassical". In truth, this "scene" looks more like a motley crew of curious artists who mix classical instruments with electronic production. Drawing influence from American minimalism, these musicians tantalise the senses and expand horizons on both sides of the musical spectrum.
As the birthplace of an ever-increasing number of metal groups, Sweden proved their worth internationally in the early 90s when a dynamic crowd of metalheads burst onto the scene. We look back in time to understand how Swedish death metal developed and what made it so original.
