Pop-country singer RaeLynn proves herself a double threat on her debut EP. After placing third in the 2012 season of The Voice (as a member of Blake Shelton's team), the Texas-born singer was signed to Dr. Luke's Prescription Songs as a songwriter before Republic Nashville added her to its roster as a recording artist. Of the five tracks on Me, she co-wrote four. The production is standard contemporary country with highly compressed electric guitars, shimmering acoustics, banjo, and stacks and stacks of backing vocals, and beats synthetic and organic, with an accordion thrown in for good measure. Her Texas drawl everywhere apparent, all the songs reflect a sassy, steely sense of determination, whether in a personal manifesto ("Kissing Frogs") or that of a shameless, man-stealing predator ("Boyfriend"). Her attitude is as brazen as the melodies are obvious here. RaeLynn's Me EP should play well to fans of slicker-than-slick hook-laden pop-country.

It's not easy to elbow your way through the macho Music City scene, the birthplace of country music, when you're a woman. Over the years, some of them have nevertheless managed to shift lines and attitudes, like these ten pioneers and revolutionaries who have put – even stamped – their boots on Nashville's table.
Much beloved in life and now mourned and celebrated after an untimely death, urban troubadour, master storyteller and folksy yet sophisticated ruminator on all things human, John Prine will always be one of the music world's greatest losses to the COVID-19 pandemic, passing in Nashville on April 7, 2020 at age 73.
If you're looking for Lucinda Williams' worldview in her music, it can be found somewhere between "Drunken Angel," and "Get Right With God." Coupled with genuine empathy for the foibles of humanity—and respect for the allure, urgency and wreck 'n' ruin of relationships—Williams has always had a healthy awe for the powers of good and evil, a looming sense of the vigilant almighty. From the album's title to the worried cover photo, a sense of misgiving hangs over the songs on her compelling new album, Good Souls Better Angels.
