Alexandra Sauser-Monnig — 1/3 of the haunting folk trio Mountain Man — has said that her debut as Daughter of Swords was written about a breakup that had yet to happen. But rather than wallowing in misery, this is the bittersweet, optimistic sound of liberation. "Fellows" examines unrequited love from the POV of the loved one and floats like a feather in mid-air. Likewise, the finger-picked guitars of "Grasses" sound like a soft simmer. Still, while much of the album is dreamy — and Sauser-Monnig's delivery isn't always fully formed words so much as a series of round vowels — don't call it twee. There's nothing that contrived in the slow, low anthem "Shining Woman" or cowgirl lope "Easy Is Hard." And Sauser-Monnig's roots may lie in traditional folk, but there are elements that call to mind a ’90s restless etherealism a la Juliana Hatfield (the moody "Fields of Gold") and Beth Orton ("Gem" and its jaunty melodies and velveteen vocals). You can even hear echoes of early Liz Phair in the sassy, harmonica-driven "Rising Sun." © Qobuz
