Talking about "Benda's concertos" may lead to some confusion: because there have been quite a few famous members of the Benda family since the start of the 18th century. To name but a few: Franz (perhaps the most famous?), his brothers Johann Georg and Georg Anton, his son Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich, and bear in mind that a lot of manuscripts only bear the surname – so it's a guessing game as to who composed what! For a long time, it was thought that all these viola concertos were written by Georg, but deeper studies of the paper, the handwriting and the composition style seem to point towards their real compose being Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Benda (1745-1814). It isn't much of a leap to presume that they were written between 1790 and 1803. Québecois viola player Jean-Eric Soucy, currently the solo viola for the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, took on this rare and delicate repertoire with a rare and delicate touch; the SWR Orchestra of Baden-Baden is conducted by his old collaborator Bernard Labadie, with whom he founded the King's Violins, a first-rate Canadian baroque ensemble. © SM/Qobuz
