Stockhausen: Mantra

Jean-Frédéric Neuburger

Classical - Released April 16, 2021 | Mirare

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
"Mantra is a sweeping epic of a work in which Stockhausen’s chief characteristics are apparent: stylistic rigour, the elaboration of a generative system of composition, the conception of a large-scale form, experimentation with electronics, and highly individual links with the divine and the cosmos. Stockhausen always believed that music was born of a single principle, deployed in a macroscopic universe. In Indian mysticism, a ‘mantra’ is a prayer that must be repeated many times; Stockhausen chose this term to designate a two-part melodic formula that is repeated throughout the work. But unlike the identical repetitions of India’s sacred utterances, Stockhausen puts his basic formula through many transformations. There will be nothing more than this ‘mantra’; nothing will be added or removed." (© Mirare / Philippe Manoury)

Merry Go Round

Delinquent Habits

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released June 20, 2000 | Polydor Associated Labels

From the moment the polished Merry Go Round kicks in, it's DJ O.G. Styles dominating the proceedings with his squiggly sounding scratches, Spanish guitar loops, and tinkling piano samples, which overshadow rappers Ives and Kimo's decent but undistinguished rhyming. The album's other rising star is Michelle, a Latin siren who appears on three songs singing mostly in Spanish. There are no shortage of strictly West Coast, cruising-with-the-top-down-passing-a-fatty-type tunes like "Boulevard Star" and "Return of the Tres." Thankfully, Delinquent Habits don't overdo it with the pot references, which is about as tired a subject in Latin rap as shootin' and killin' folks is in mainstream rap. The Habits' lyrics are also extremely laid-back and free of any reference to gangs and violence, except when they occasionally dis that whole scene. In fact, the majority of Merry Go Round sounds very phat indeed. Perhaps there is a radio programmer out there willing to take a chance and reach out to rap radio's huge Latino audience, but, regardless, Delinquent Habits have fashioned the finest melding of hip-hop and Latin grooves to date.© Adam Bregman /TiVo

Bury Me In My Boots

The Cadillac Three

Country - Released August 5, 2016 | Big Machine Records, LLC

Booklet
It took the Cadillac Three some time to finish their second album, Bury Me in My Boots. Its first single, "The South" -- a bro-country singalong celebration featuring Florida Georgia Line and Dierks Bentley -- came out in 2013, a full three years before Bury Me in My Boots finally hit the stores, and each of those subsequent years saw a new single: "Party Like You," another bro-country stomper, in 2014, followed by "White Lightning" in the new year, a ballad that has nothing to do with George Jones' classic of the same name. Such activities suggest the Cadillac Three had some difficulty finding either their voice or their audience, and Bury Me in My Boots doesn't do much to dissuade that notion. Alternating between bro country that's just past its sell-by date, summertime party tunes so breezy they get silly, and a heavy dose of southern rock, the Cadillac Three demonstrate versatility but they also seem scattered, as if they're scrambling for an audience. They fare worse on the lightest moments: the wannabe beach anthem "Ship Faced" has an offhand reference to listening to "Bimmy Juffett," they sound cutesy singing about "a little sip sip sippy" from a bottle on "Peace Love & Dixie," and "Hot Damn" is a parade of cringe. Excise these from the record -- the contrived levity tends to infect the songs and surround them -- and Bury Me in My Boots gets better. Perhaps the bro country sounds like a throwback but it's executed well, and the Cadillac Three especially excel when they dig into hard, churning southern rock spiked with a hint of U2. These moments comprise nearly half the album -- the slow sludge of the title track, the churning "Drink Like You," the bittersweet "Runnin' Red Lights" -- and they not only indicate the Cadillac Three may be better on-stage than on record, they point the direction the trio should pursue next time.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Accent On Africa

Cannonball Adderley Quintet

Jazz - Released January 1, 1968 | EMI Catalogue

Though labeled as a Cannonball Adderley Quintet session, this is actually a workout with a percussion section loaded with African drums, a big band, and in spots, voices -- all unidentified. Nevertheless, this is one of the best and most overlooked of the Cannonball Adderley Capitols, a rumbling session that bursts with the joy of working in an unfamiliar yet vital rhythmic context. Cannonball turns in one of his swinging-est solos through a Varitone electronic attachment on Caiphus Semenya's "Gumba Gumba" and "Marabi" is a real hip-jiggler; you can't sit still through it. Other highlights include Cannon preaching blue smoke in his own Afro-Cuban-blues-flavored "Hamba Nami," a dignified trip through Wes Montgomery's "Up and At It," and Nat Adderley's commanding work on cornet at all times.© Richard S. Accent on the blues

Big John Patton

Jazz - Released August 1, 1970 | Blue Note Records

Most John Patton albums are hard-driving, edgy soul-jazz and funk, and the title of Accent on the Blues makes the record seem like it would be no different than his other sessions. Of course, that isn't the case. Accent on the Blues is among the most atmospheric music Patton has ever made. While it stops short of being free, it's hardly funky soul-jazz, and that may disappoint some fans of his rip-roaring style. Nevertheless, the album is a rewarding listen, primarliy because it displays a more reflective side of his talent, demonstrating that he can hold his own among the likes of guitarist James Blood Ulmer and saxophonist Marvin Cabell.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo
