Dounia Tabolo

Boubacar Traore

Africa - Released November 17, 2017 | Lusafrica

Hi-Res
The close links between Malian musicians and Mississippi blues are no longer a secret. It’s not only because of the influx of African slaves who were taken to the cotton plantations, but also because of an influence going in the opposite direction. Boubacar Traoré, for example, saw an enormous success in 1963, in his country with his Mali twist, under the grip of the Unites States. Half a century later, Kar Kar is staying faithful to the style that he came to know. For this Dounia Tabolo, he even went to Louisiana to converse with some local musicians about some new compositions and key pieces in his repertoire. It was there that he met Cedric Watson and his Cajun violin, as well as Corey Harris (who was at the centre of Martin Scorsese’s blues documentary Feel Like Going Home) on the guitar and mic. The cellist Leyla McCalla also responds to Boubacar Traoré on Je chanterai pour toi. These happy associations are a wonderful complement to Kar Kar’s natural musical balance and his faithful accomplices, Alkassane Samaké on percussion and Vincent Bucher on the harmonica. A record of obvious elegance. © BM/Qobuz

Maciré (Kar Kar)

Boubacar Traore

Africa - Released January 1, 1999 | Indigo

Like Ali Farka Toure, Traoré (known also as Kar Kar) is a master of the singular, bluesy Malian style. Loping, gentle grooves with subtle polyrhythms run through these very personal songs delivered in Traoré 's plaintive, rugged tenor. The title track is particularly powerful, interweaving his love for his brother with his respect for General Soumare, one of the leaders of Mali independence. A moving work. © Tim Sheridan /TiVo

Sa golo (Kar Kar)

Boubacar Traore

Africa - Released January 1, 1996 | Indigo

A nice album from one of the original Malian bluesmen -- the great Boubacar Traoré (known originally on Radio Mali as Kar Kar). Originally, hits like "Mali Twist" made him famous in his homeland, though he disappeared for some time from the limelight, emerging after his wife's death to record albums like this one. The style is vaguely similar to other Malian bluesers such as Ali Farka Touré: a relatively stripped-down format with little to no accompaniment. The accompaniment on the album comes from a calabash (gourd used as percussion). The combination of his voice and tender picking style leads to a rather sentimental mood for a few of the works, and the faster ones have more of that reminiscent John Lee Hooker/Ali Farka Touré style. The main difference is in the vocal abilities -- Boubacar is actually singing, much more than the others; melody is important to the vocal section of the songs. For fans of African blues, this would be a definite pick. For newcomers, it might not be a bad introduction at all, though more of an easing in could perhaps be found in Taj Mahal's efforts with Toumani Diabate. © Adam Greenberg /TiVo

5 Stars - Excellent - "...he blends blues and European folk licks with the centuries-old kora music of hereditary griots...His mellow picking and mournful vocals suggest the gentle ragtime blues of songsters like Furry Lewis and Mississippi John Hurt..."© TiVo

Kar Kar

Boubacar Traore

World - Released March 27, 1992 | Sterns

Traoré sings his own songs to a solo acoustic guitar backing that stylistically and emotionally echoes traditional koras without actually imitating them, rather as the early Congo guitarists picked up on finger-piano patterns.© John Storm Roberts, Original Music /TiVo
