Seablite

Inspired by noisy guitar bands of the '80s along with shoegaze and dream pop groups of the '90s, Seablite pursue a light and airy variant of the sound. This approach was evidenced on their debut album from 2019, Grass Stains & Novocaine, as well as on its follow-up, 2023's Lemon Lights. The Bay Area band formed in 2016 when singer/guitarist Lauren Matsui and bassist/vocalist Galine Tumasyan, who had been friends for a while, decided to start playing music together. Matsui had previously been in the band Cocktails, while Tumasyan was an accomplished visual artist. They began playing songs influenced by the buzzing guitar pop of C-86 bands like the Shop Assistants, dream pop luminaries such as Lush, and noisier American groups like Tiger Trap. The duo were soon joined by guitarist Jen Mundy, who had been a member of Wax Idols. The trio chose making a record over playing shows and spent time in their practice space recording songs. The result was a self-titled cassette made with the help of drummer Andrew Brush and self-released in June 2017. Not long after that, drummer Andy Pastalaniec of Cruel Summer joined Seablite, and their sound clicked into place. Once they had a new batch of songs ready to go, they headed to the Tiny Telephone studio, where they tracked the drums and bass. After that they went to a different studio -- where Matsui's husband worked -- and spent loads of after-hours time on guitars and vocal overdubs. They also brought in former Brian Jonestown Massacre member Joel Gion to add percussion to a handful of tracks. The record, titled Grass Stains & Novocaine, was mixed by Matt Bullimore of Mantles, then mastered by Stew Anderson of Boyracer fame. His label Emotional Response released the album in June of 2019. Recorded that July with Alicia Vanden Heuvel of the Aislers Set and Magic Trick as producer, engineer, and mixer, the EP High-Rise Mannequins followed on the label in February of 2020. The group reconvened in the studio for the double A-side single "Breadcrumbs" b/w "Ink Bleeds," which appeared on Emotional Response in early 2022. Seablite then signed with Mt. St. Mtn. for their sophomore album. Recorded with Robby Joseph (Cool Ghouls, Cindy), mixed by Pastalaniec, and mastered by Ride's Mark Gardener, Lemon Lights arrived on Mt. St. Mtn. in September 2023.
