Christmas falls on the 3rd November this year for electro fans. Because each time Erwan Castex a.k.a. Rone drops an album it really is a gift. This disc comes four years after Tohu Bohu (his magnificent missive written and posted from Berlin, which allowed him to make a name for himself and impose a style of his own) and two years after the beautiful and bewildering album Creatures. This gifted sound engineer has now added another floor to his electronic tower of Babel. And yes, it is indeed this famous construction from The Book of Genesis that is the best symbol for his work. Far from the dancefloor, Rone’s music is a multistory building in which we have already met people as diverse as Etienne Daho, François Marry without her Atlas Mountains, the unusual cellist Gaspar Claus, the equally elusive pianist Bachar Mar-Khalifé, Bryce Dessner from The National or even the avant-garde Japanese trumpeter Toshinori Kondo… For this fourth work, whose liner notes bear the name of Michel Gondry and his son Paul, Rone has assembled John Stanier, Claus and Dessner from the group Vacarme once again, as well as the slam poet Saul Williams, the quirky Baxter Dury, the Israeli Noga Erez and Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead. Taken independently, each piece on Mirapolis differs from the next. But Rone, being a sound architect, manages to homogenize all these sound textures and ambiences to make for a disorienting sensory trip. Sometimes electro is not the dominant genre but this doesn’t matter as it’s always Rone who comes out on top. © MD/Qobuz

A crazy tinkerer from the techno sphere, Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet pens a ninth UFO, of which he has a knack for creating. The bulimic British—who, when he doesn’t work on his own music, mixes for The XX, A$AP Rocky, Oneohtrix Point Never, Aphex Twin, Explosions In The Sky, Super Furry Animals, Radiohead, Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, Manic Street Preachers, Sia and even Black Sabbath—pursues here his 360° electro-new age trip armed with the Ableton Live software. His world is atmospheric at times, overtly techno at other times, sometimes even world, and, in any case, completely impossible to pin down. Four Tet being absolutely eclectic (he had penned a splendid FabricLive volume in perfect line with his kaleidoscopically personality, an intense trip in 2-step and garage land where we notably crossed paths with Dan Snaith, his friend from Caribou, but also with Burial, Crazy Bald Heads and even the master Ricardo Villalobos), his disc looks like him more than ever. It’s some great piece of art with no blinkers on, conceived with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith on synths (on LA Trance) and Tom Bake at the hang (on Lush). © MD/Qobuz

When listening to Music For Airports for the first time, fans of the glam-Brian Eno from the Roxy Music period and his album Here Come The Warm Jets must have been blown away… Goodbye bowiesque sounds, hello the experiments of Terry Riley, Steve Reich, John Cage, LaMonte Young and other wisemen who were mad about minimalist music. In 1978, Eno (ahead of his time) conceived four long tracks of instrumental music each over 10 minutes long. Sounding like movies soundtracks, these explorations to the borders of new age and these climatic developments of an astonishing sensuality prefigure an entire part of what the electronic music will sound like a few years later, and ambient music in particular. All that’s left is to listen to the atmospheric masterpieces in airports… © MZ/Qobuz

Fans of electro are extremely familiar with the concept of a remix, but the art has also existed for a long time in classical and contemporary music. New York pianist Bruce Brubaker has dedicated his career to the exploration of this concept. Released in May 2015, Glass Piano is the first collaboration between Brubaker and the InFiné label, which brought beautiful reinterpretations of pieces by Philip Glass to the solo piano. From these titles, the label decided to continue the process initiated by Brubaker by inviting artists from different generations and genres to revisit pieces from Glass Piano. The EP starts with a recent signing of the label’s, Julien Earle. The American producer is only 17 years old, and crafts a remix of Mad Rush that is full of emotion; it is a house-y tune reminiscent of one Nicolas Jaar. For his part, another producer, Akufen, opts for a cozier atmosphere that blends jazz with an exactitude that heads towards Tangerine Sunset Mix by John Beltran, borrowing riffs and air guitars. By contrast, Biblo takes the listener to a darker atmosphere with his interpretation, which blends techno and ambient vocals, sounding soft and tortured. What follows is a remix done by the classical pianist and electro-dabbler Francesco Tristano Schlimé, who maintains a special relationship with the label and with Brubaker. Tristano was, indeed, a student of Bruce Brubaker’s at the Julliard School in New York. He was also the first artist to be signed to InFiné – his album Not For Piano was released on the label in 2007. Finally, Plaid, the legendary London duo on Warp, brand Metamorphosis 5 with their electronic stamp, involving more than just a touch of hip-hop…
