About Playlist
Incredibly versatile and precise, Steve Gadd has been one of the most sought-after and recorded drummers in modern music history for 50 years. With his great technique and musicality, he has always excelled throughout his long career in finding the best drum parts for each song or arrangement (for example, Aja, from Steely Dan’s album of the same name, was recorded in just two takes). Along with such illustrious collaborators as Buddy Rich, Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie and Tony Williams, Gadd has taken the drums to the next level, making the instrument a driving force in every band. Arguably one of the most influential musicians of the early 1970s, Steve Gadd succeeded in creating a completely new language and sound for the drums, recognisable on the first listen and emulated by several generations of drummers. With his great technique, precision and elegance, he helped to make a number of pop, jazz, soul, funk and rock recordings true masterpieces. In addition to the aforementioned Aja by Steely Dan, you only have to listen to Paul Simon’s 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, Al Jarreau’s Spain or Rickie Lee Jones’ Chuck E’s In Love, to name but a few, to understand the importance and creativity of this great musician. Al Jarreau, Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, James Taylor, Peter Gabriel, Chick Corea, Paul Simon, Davis Sanborn, Steps, Eric Clapton, Pino Daniele and many other musicians owe much to Steve Gadd’s precise and elegant drumming. Adored, studied, copied - every time an album is released with him on drums, or he goes on tour, anyone who loves music runs to hear him play. This playlist covers parts of his 50-year career and highlights the variety of styles in which Steve Gadd is able to express his great musicality, elegance and precision.
