About Playlist

A true guitar maestro, Shuggie Otis is known for his distinctive style inspired by soul, funk and blues. The son of 50s radio star Johnny Otis, Shuggie was immersed in music from an early age and began recording his first songs at the age of 15. A gifted guitarist and songwriter, he already had three solo albums to his name by the age of twenty. Inspired by the psychedelic and blues-rock influences of the 60s, including Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and Arthur Lee, he recorded his first album with Al Kooper in 1969. "Freedom Flight", released in 1971, is a jewel of the psychedelic soul genre, featuring the original "Strawberry Letter 23", later covered by the Brothers Johnson (and produced by Quincy Jones). His 4th and final album, "Inspiration Information", was produced entirely by Shuggie himself, a little-known work that would go on to influence major artists such as Prince and Lenny Kravitz. However, the album was not a commercial success and his label, Epic Records, decided to end his contract. The Rolling Stones approached him at the same time, offering him a world tour, which he turned down, as well as the opportunity to work with Quincy Jones. It wasn't until 2013 that he really got back into the swing of things, embarking on a world tour that enabled him to win over a new audience. Discover the best of Shuggie Otis!
