Until the end of his life in April 2020, despite the passing of time and a less obvious liveliness, Konitz always had this unique sound that very early on offered an alternative to Charlie Parker’s be-bop revolution. All that remained was to let himself be carried away by his fluid and deep phrases, as if chiseled by the years. Konitz had seen and heard everything, but never just relied on his accolades — to be so fresh, inspired and unpadded when you’ve crossed swords with Miles Davis, Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans, Gerry Muligan, Stan Kenton, Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus and Elvin Jones! Lee Konitz was a discreet poet of great modesty who had been all of the revolutions: bop, cool, post bop free…
