About Playlist
Dive into the heart of English composer Gerald Finzi's work with some of his most outstanding scores, such as Dies Natalis, the Clarinet Concerto, the Eclogue or Let us Garlands Bring. The work of Gerald Raphael Finzi (1901-1956) reveals an absolute passion for the work of J. S. Bach: the incipit of the Eclogue, for piano and orchestra, remains the best example of this, however, the final arias of the two cantatas Farewell to Arms and Dies Natalis find the spirit and melodic curves of the Cantor's chorales with emotion and subtlety. The great concert works, beginning with the Clarinet Concerto, as well as his great fresco Intimations of Immortality reveal a definite kinship with the very lyrical aesthetic of a Ralph Vaughan Williams, but Finzi is always more melancholy and resigned. This playlist attempts to offer the best available interpretations of Finzi's chosen works: Bryn Terfel is of rare subtlety in Let Us Garlands Bring, Piers Lane offers moving phrases in his second recording of L'Eclogue (Decca, 2003), and the English Chamber Orchestra is conducted by a very vocal Nicholas Daniel. As for Philip Langridge in the finale of "Intimations of Immortality", he is simply brilliant. © Qobuz
