Multi-instrumentalist, composer, businessman: Eric Serra has more than one string to his bow! Raised by a songwriter father, he learnt to play guitar from the age of five before studying electric guitar, drums, bass, piano and synthesizers. At fifteen, the young musician formed his first progressive rock band before becoming a studio musician and meeting Pierre Jolivet and then Luc Besson, who asked him to compose the music for L'Avant dernier, Le Dernier Combat and Subway in 1985. He won a Victoire de la Musique award and was nominated for a César. The soundtrack for The Big Blue in 1988 established Eric Serra's reputation: he won a César, the SACEM Grand Prix and was even made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. Building on this success, he set up his own production and publishing company, as well as his own recording studio, The X-Plorer. The composer's success continued with three new awards for the soundtracks of Nikita, Atlantis and Léon. He also wrote the soundtrack for Goldeneye before reuniting with Besson for The Fifth Element. Eric Serra's first album, RXRA, was released in 1998 and he continued to collaborate on the soundtracks of various films: L'art (délicat) de la séduction, 15 août, Wasabi, Bandidas and Arthur et les Minimoys. He is now back with the soundtrack for Le Salaire de la Peur, inspired by the original film of the same name directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot in 1953. Photo © Emanuele Scorcelletti
