About Playlist
The birth of the Blue Öyster Cult wasn't a hidden beauty - at first there was no pearl nestled within the shell of this particular oyster. Instead, it emerged as a raw, visceral sound pulsating through overheated amplifiers. Blue Öyster Cult began in 1967 as Soft White Underbelly. After their lead singer Les Braunstein left, Eric Bloom stepped in. They played small gigs at unremarkable venues until they caught their big break. In 1971, they changed their name to Blue Öyster Cult after a bad review of a live performance. This time, the band's career was definitively launched. Their first album came out the next year. By playing hard rock, they stood out from British bands, sharing stages with acts like Alice Cooper and The Byrds. Their standout album, Tyranny and Mutation, dropped in 1973. They kept the momentum with hits like (Don't Fear) The Reaper and Secret Treaties in 1974. Co-founder Allen Lanier (guitar and keyboards) also worked with Patti Smith, adding depth and breadth to their music. From 1972 to 2002, they released 14 studio albums and five live albums. Despite some personnel changes, they remained a force in hard rock, packing venues and releasing countless hard rock hits throughout the '70s. They made a big comeback in 2020 with The Symbol Remains, their first album in 19 years, and followed it up with Ghost Stories in 2024. © AR/Qobuz Photo © Sandra Roeser
