Aarre Merikanto is probably one of the most unique names in the Finnish music scene. In the 1920s, he was quite sensitive to post-Scriabinian Russian futurism, but his orchestral language was also soon enriched by other aesthetics: Strauss and Sibelius of course, with even some echoes of Varèse occasionally (via Sibelius all the same). About Playlist

Aarre Merikanto is probably one of the most unique names in the Finnish music scene. In the 1920s, he was quite sensitive to post-Scriabinian Russian futurism, but his orchestral language was also soon enriched by other aesthetics: Strauss and Sibelius of course, with even some echoes of Varèse occasionally (via Sibelius all the same). Too few recordings are dedicated to this ever-fascinating composer (Pan, the piano concertos, etc.), who remains the author of one of the most beautiful operas written in the first half of the 20th century.
