Know Your Lemmy

by Jean-Pierre Sabouret

On 24th December 2017, Lemmy Kilmister would have celebrated his 72nd birthday, and therefore more than forty years at the head of Motörhead, the noisiest rock ‘n’ roll band in history. Rapid onset cancer finally felled the one who had become an icon that many believed to be immortal, given how many times his death was announced and then refuted. Motörhead, which logically ended with him, therefore lived for four decades through all the ups, downs and misunderstandings…

Mikkey Dee joined the band on their eleventh album Bastards (November 1993). With him, Motörhead gave the impression of having rediscovered its essence. It’s the same with its successor, the powerful Sacrifice (July 1995), with the exception of Würzel who threw in the towel after having been a ghost in the studio. This betrayal is a hard pill to swallow for Lemmy: “I don’t know why Würzel left, you’ll have to ask him. He had his reasons. He left us ‘with a fax’. Here you go. If you have something important to tell me, send me a fax, Hahaha!” But there’s always a silver lining, and Motörhead would then find itself in a trio formation, that many consider as their natural formation, as Phil Campbell justified: “When Würzel left, I was the one to suggest to Lem’ and Mikkey: ‘I think we can do it as a trio, we have to try it and, if after a few rehearsals, we really need someone else, I’ll be the first to admit it. I’ll know it more than anyone else.” But, as soon as the three of us played, something so strong happened that we never had to look for another guitarist since. The band’s sound has found its balance once again, with a defined space for each instrument, and then everyone has their back to the wall in a trio.

On the eve of his fiftieth birthday, Lemmy felt like he has to get things straight: he was neither a tyrant, nor a diva, Motörhead is a band, a real one: “Many people think that ‘Lemmy is Motörhead”. But, if that were the case, I’d have called the band ‘Lemmy’ or ‘Lemmy and Motörhead’. If only you knew what we had to go through to still be here today. People think that we switch musicians all the time. But in twenty years, there’s only been eight different musicians beside me in the band. It’s not that bad.” The boss however didn’t complain when Metallica, aka the Lemmys, sprung on him for his birthday by appearing on the stage of the Whisky a go go in Los Angeles disguised as him.

Nobody would have believed it possible, especially the concerned parties, but, with Overnight Sensation (October 1996), Motörhead began a period of almost 20 years of stability and consistency. When they released their twentieth album, The Wörld Is Yours (December 2010), Phil Campbell didn’t fail to be amazed by it: “You should never try to plan everything ahead. The band has always lived on a day to day basis, without any strategy. When you get organized in a specific way, it always ends up falling apart. Even I couldn’t have imagined that the band would hold for so long. Nobody could have imagined. We didn’t have any plan for the future, not even the one to split (laughs). We still get so much pleasure playing and living together.

Each new Motörhead production would prove that the band was far from irrelevant. Without ever losing their easily identifiable style, the three musicians and their faithful producer, Cameron Webb, knew it was time for an update. Far from being nostalgic, Lemmy has always been attentive to everything that happened in the world of music, following a principle that he has explained again and again: “I still listen to many bands, whether old or new. You should never lose sight of your roots, nor cut yourself from your time, or you just become some kind of cabaret performer that always repeats the same trick.

It’s even on the four or five last albums that, far from being the unflappable monolith that we thought, Motörhead took some liberties that we would never have imagined from them. Campbell concludes with humor: “We took our time, but we ended up realizing that as soon as Lemmy’s voice resonates, this becomes a Motörhead song. We could never be mistaken for another band, whatever we end up playing.
