Fabric, A British Institution

by Smaël Bouaici

Since 1999, Fabric has been the heart and soul of the British electronic scene. Its Fabric and FabricLive compilation CD’s are imperative to the lives of record sellers and quality music lovers, while the club thrills clubbers every weekend with a 5-star program. Let’s dive into the history of a British institution.

A legendary series of compilations

Weekends at the club are divided in two “theme” parties. On Saturdays, this is Fabric, then, with Craig Richards, and the line-ups are rather house and techno. Fridays are dubbed FabricLive, and they are “sound clash” parties which blend genres, ragga, grime, breakbeat, dubstep, drum’n’bass, with names like David Rodigan, Alix Perez, Chase & Status, Congo Natty, Erol Alkan, Goldie, Groove Armada, Kode9, Loefah and LTJ Bukem on the bill. Fabric and FabricLive would become, two years after its opening, the names of the series of compilations from the club, which would later become a label. “Not everyone can come to Fabric,” explains Geoff Muncey, Fabric Records’ former label manager. “Therefore, we wanted to set up a series which would allow people to have an idea of what was played at the club.” The first volume of the Fabric compilations was logically entrusted to Craig Richards, in 2001, for a mix telling the story of “the innocent trip out on a Sunday morning in Room One”. The second volume goes to Terry Francis, before the two legends would join the series: New-York house pioneer Tony Humphries on Fabric 04 and legendary BBC DJ John Peel on FabricLive 07. Following up would be the first German, Michael Mayer  (November 2003, Fabric 13) and the first Frenchmen, Ivan Smagghe (July 2005, Fabric 23), a French contingent completed by Agoria and Brodinski in 2011, and Apollonia in 2013.

In 2005, FabricLive is entrusted to Diplo, who had won people over with his first album Florida on Ninja Tune and most of all with the mixtapes Hollertronix with his colleague DJ Low Budget. The mix is sanctioned by DJ Mag as “the best representation of Fabric's eclectic approach to dance music”. The future Major Lazer intertwined Cybotron, Juan Atkins first band, Cajmere’s Percolator, Aphex Twin, M.I.A., The Cure, The Brazilian funk trio Gaiola Das Popozudas and even Outkast, they all hit the eardrums of many people in the process. Two years later, a third French name gets the opportunity to join this pantheon of British music, but Justice, who had just released their album Cross, failed spectacularly. Their track list, which included titles from Daniel Balavoine and Julien Clerc and even Frankie Valli’s Who Loves You—so, far from underground tracks—is logically rejected by the British label. Ed Banger will end up releasing the attempt on the web in 2016, under the name Xmas Mix...

But 2007 is mostly marked by Ricardo VillalobosFabric 36, which involuntarily managed a marketing ploy that no PR team would have dared, by only putting his own tracks on it, making this mix a true solo album. “It is all my productions and it’s a form of introducing an album as a mix. Fabric is the perfect label for me to do this on. I really prefer for it to be treated like a normal mix CD, with no hype. Every time you do an album and then you do the next one, people start to compare how the music is different, why you did it on this label and not that label, they try to define it, ‘the other album was better,’ ‘there’s no hit like ‘Easy Lee’ on it’ and so on... exhausting, really,” explained the Chilean during the release of the Fabric. Three years later, in 2010, while D-Bridge & Instra:mental’s FabricLive 50 reminded us of the essential role of the club for the drum’n’bass and break beat, Shackleton made use of the same process. The British dubstep producer—who had been incidentally pushed into the spotlight by Ricardo Villalobos, remixed Blood On My Hands for 19 minutes—delivered 22 tracks that he composed himself for an 80-minute mix displaying a rare intensity. It’s a disc which marks the history of the series, like the spectacular opus by Four Tet in 2011 on FabricLive 59, which lines up with rare fluidity Caribou, Villalobos, Burial and Floating Points and proves that mixing tracks is an art that goes far beyond technical skills.

In 2014, Elijah & Skilliam’s FabricLive 75 displayed the new vitality of the grime scene, and the last few years has allowed Fabric to award deserving DJs, such as the British Ibiza star Cassy (Fabric 71 in 2013), the Swiss veteran Deetron (Fabric 76 in 2014), the pioneer of the British acid house scene Baby Ford (Fabric 85 in 2015), or the Russian Nina Kraviz, with Fabric 91 in 2016. That year, Fabric thought it was going to come to an end, when its club license was revoked following the death of two teenagers due to an overdose in August. But thanks to a massive mobilization and a 111-track compilation to raise money, the club finally won the fight and was able to reopen on January 6, 2017. The disc release went on: after Tale of UsFabric 97 and Maceo Plex’s 98, legendary British DJ Sasha was put in charge of number 99, while Fabric announced in May that the 100th opus would close out the series, which will be reborn in another form as fans wait impatiently.
