Third Day's Southern rock treatment of favorite Christmas melodies is a breath of fresh holiday air for rock enthusiasts. Despite the sometimes gritty riffs, it is surprising how delicately the album comes off. The quintet blends the energy of its six studio releases with the graceful spirit of carols like "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "O Come All Ye Faithful." The result is a collection of mostly midtempo drivers with plenty of buildups and cathartic climaxes. The guitars never roar louder than Mac Powell's earnest vocals as he belts out the well-known lyrics without pretense. For balance, the album includes live recordings of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "The First Noel." Overall, Third Day cement their sound further into the hearts of fans while whetting the appetite of those unfamiliar with their catalog. ~ Jared Johnson

The 12th studio long-player from the award-winning, veteran Southern CCM outfit, Lead Us Back: Songs of Worship is Third Day's first collection of all-original worship material. Soulful and cinematic, it's the third in a trilogy of praise & worship albums (the two prior outings, 2000's Offerings: A Worship Album and 2003's Offerings II: All I Have to Give were two of the group's most successful releases) and features the hit single "Soul on Fire." ~ James Christopher Monger

Miracle, the 12th studio outing from venerable CCM rockers Third Day, mostly eschews the rootsy Southern rock approach of 2008's Revelation and 2010's Move for a more streamlined, mainstream pop sound that utilizes the seasoned knob twiddling of veteran producer Brendan O'Brien (the Killers, Anberlin, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen). The meaty opener "Hit Me Like a Bomb" charges out of the gate with gusto, suggesting a fist-bumping, stadium-ready set that's destined to hit fans square in the chest and leave them reeling. However, Miracle is at its most effective when it heads back south, as is the case on the wily and wonderful "The Victory," a propulsive, midtempo call to personal arms that sticks out like an oil lamp in the fog. ~ James Christopher Monger

Gospel - Released October 18, 2010 | Essential Records

After a number of career moves attempting to position themselves as the next big thing in rock, Third Day appear resigned to their place as one of the biggest rockers in Christian music: nothing more, nothing less. Move, the Atlanta foursome's ninth studio disc and umpteenth return to form, reveals that much, as it finds the group embracing, hopefully definitively, that midpoint between spiritual fervor and Southern rock passion that suits them so well. Neither facet gets more playtime than the other; instead, they coexist as one, allowing Third Day to sound more assured and natural than they have in years. If previous efforts like Wire and Revelation were intentionally populist in approach, Move appears to be aimed squarely at the ardent Christian fan base the band has amassed over the years: those who loved their anthems "Cry Out to Jesus," "My Hope Is You," and "Show Me Your Glory." In that sense, Move is a move in the right direction: the songs are so huge and unapologetic -- big guitars, big choruses, big messages -- they leave no doubt as to the group's spiritual intentions. It is this Third Day -- not the mainstream-friendly, erstwhile Seattle rock doppelganger -- that has been responsible for some of the most enduring repertoire modern CCM has seen. ~ Andree Farias
