Liza Anne
Liza Anne rose out of Nashville in the mid-2010s spinning atmospheric and emotionally resonant tales of love and sorrow with sparse but powerful accompaniment. Over subsequent releases, the singer/songwriter moved increasingly into a brighter, more rock- and pop-driven sound, especially on 2020's new wave-inspired Bad Vacation. Their knack for pairing upbeat melodic hooks with smart, self-aware lyrics was evident on the rousing 2023 single "Cheerleaders."
Liza Anne (full name Elizabeth Anne Odachowski) was born in St. Simons Island, Georgia on February 3, 1994. Their passion for music was nurtured by their artist aunt and guitarist and luthier uncle, who encouraged Liza Anne to express themself through music. At age ten, they started playing guitar, and by 14 had begun writing songs, encouraged by early influences like Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac. As a teenager, Liza Anne landed a part-time job at a coffee shop, where they occasionally performed for the patrons, initially doing cover tunes before working up the nerve to play their own songs. After graduating from high school, Liza Anne's uncle helped them build an electric guitar, and they enrolled at Nashville's Belmont University to study songwriting.
While at Belmont, Liza Anne made friends with Zachary Dyke, a fellow student who was doing an internship at a recording studio. Dyke was allowed to use the studio when it wasn't booked, and he recorded and co-produced Liza Anne's debut album, 2014's The Colder Months, during the studio's off-hours. Following its release, Liza Anne left college to focus on their music, performing regularly and developing a loyal audience for their often emotionally intense songs. A second album, Two, followed in 2015, once again produced in collaboration with Dyke, and yielded a streaming hit in the atmospheric acoustic ballad "Lost." Liza Anne and Dyke traveled to Paris, France to record their third album, which was captured during six days of sessions at La Frette Studios. Their first for Toronto's Arts + Crafts label, 2018's Fine But Dying was a concerted move into a more aggressive rock sound and reflected themes of duality with wit and candor.
Liza Anne continued to move away from their acoustic origins on their fourth album, Bad Vacation. Released in 2020 and co-produced by Kyle Ryan and Micah Tawlks, Bad Vacation embraced new wave and power pop with bright melodies and strong melodic hooks. This trend continued to an even greater degree with 2023's "Cheerleaders," a bold queer anthem that doubled down on the singer's increasingly pop-driven sound.
