Appearing at the completely different end of the spectrum from the nu-folk brigade, female vocal trio Lady Maisery may be more traditional than your Marlings and Mumfords, but their debut album, Weave and Spin, is far from a typical affair. The sparsely produced first effort from Hannah James (Kerfuffle), Hazel Askew (the Askew Sisters), and Rowan Rheingans (Fidola) features three medleys which attempt to revive the art of diddling, a form of traditional singing popular in Scandinavia, one of which ("Primrose Polka/Bluebell Polka") sees James show off her clogging skills. There's an enchanting rendition of Crucible's "The Changeling's Lullaby," a heartbreaking tale based on the "fairy's child" myth; the musical adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling poem "My Boy Jack," and closing the hymn, "Sleep On Beloved," all of which offer nothing more than the girls' exquisite three-part harmonies. It's a brave concept which -- apart from the slightly jarring '50s barbershop reworking of music hall standard "Mary Ann," and the jolly sea shanty-style interpretation of traditional folk number "The Capable Wife" -- works surprisingly well. However, avoiding the novelty vibe that 13 a cappella tracks inevitably creates, the three-piece wisely mix things up a little, and it's these ever so slightly more expansive offerings that produce the album's highlights. "Portland Town" features a suitably melancholic fiddle arrangement which perfectly complements the anti-war lyrics of U.S. folk singer Derroll Adams' protest classic. A surprising inclusion of a ban-sitar helps to provide an eerily unique take on the medieval folk song, "Nottamun Town," while the delicately lilting harp chords on gypsy singer Mary Ann Haynes' "The Colour of Amber," and the brooding accordion of child ballad "Willie's Lady," showcase the band's accomplished and versatile musicianship. Weave and Spin is perhaps a little too old-school to reel in those whose knowledge of folk begins and ends with the recent chart-bothering outfits, but it's a beautifully crafted collection of songs which somehow manages to feel both reassuringly familiar and impressively unique.
