After breaking up his popular quartet in 1969, Charles Lloyd largely dropped out of sight. He re-emerged once in awhile in the '70s to record a bit, but those sessions tended to be influenced by his interest in transcendental meditation and were often merely mood music. 1972's Waves is mostly forgettable, finding Lloyd on tenor and flute playing relaxing and soothing solos. Three of the eight numbers are of slightly greater interest because of the presence of guitarist Gabor Szabo, but the use of background vocalists on "TM" does not help, and most of the music is quite faceless.
