Vaughan Williams’ love of the human voice led him to compose more than 120 songs and song cycles, excluding folksong arrangements, and a similar number of vocal and choral works. To this devotion to the voice can be added his love for both the violin, which he described as his ‘musical salvation’, and the viola – the instrument to which he switched in the school orchestra at Charterhouse in 1887. Later, Vaughan Williams reserved many of the deepest, most heartfelt passages of his music for the viola. The music on this album captures this double love, bringing together five works for tenor and piano, two for tenor, viola, and piano, and two pieces for viola and piano alone. The major works on the recording sung by tenor James Gilchrist, accompanied by violist Philip Dukes and pianist Anna Tilbrook (if one can speak of « accompaniment » for these instrumental parts which carry as mush music and emotion as the singer’s part does) are the fresh, invigorating, and at times reflective song cycle Songs of Travel, for tenor and piano (no viola), composed between 1901 and 1904, on poems by Robert Louis Stevenson. The other heavyweight work is the Four Hymns, for tenor, viola and piano, written between 1912 and 1914. This intimate and ecstatic music, appropriate to poems of divine love and longing, was described by the composer as ‘much in the same mood as the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis’. Between these two pillars, Gilchrist, Dukes and Tilbrook unwind an impressive corpus of songs as well as some pieces for viola and piano, in particular Six Studies in English Folk Song initially written for cello and piano in 1926 but soon arranged for viola and piano by Vaughan Williams himself. © SM/Qobuz
