You might want to search the Internet for some information about British composer Norman Peterkin (1886-1982), but alas, you won’t find much, and not even that. Admittedly, Peterkin was more renowned for his contribution to many other aspects of British music (other than composing, that is) for over sixty years, in particular as a 'grandad' figure for the Music Department of Oxford University Press, even though he did gain some fame as the composer of the song, 'I heard a piper piping'. Born the year Franz Liszt died, years before Walton or Britten, he has outlived most of the contemporaries and known more or less everything the 20th Century had to offer, in terms of novelties, breakthroughs, fads, fashions and musical revolutions. His own art songs, which he began composing in the 20s, may initially have borne the influence of Grieg, before Peterkin moved forwards in the worlds of Debussy, Delius or the later Elgar. Will History restore his role in the British music scene, at least that of art song composers he was contemporary of, i.e. Butterworth, Warlock, Gurney ou Bax? This recording’s main virtue is to pave the way to a hopeful revival of his music. © SM/Qobuz
