Carol Sloane pays tribute to the recently deceased Carmen McRae (a close personal associate) on this excellent set. Although she considered McRae an influence, Sloane actually sounds much closer to Ella Fitzgerald on many of the numbers and makes no attempt to imitate her friend. Joined by pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Michael Moore, drummer Ron Vincent and (on seven of the 13 selections) Phil Woods on alto and clarinet, Sloane performs 13 standards (only "Cloudy Morning" is a bit obscure), all of which Carmen McRae used to enjoy, even if several (such as "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry," "Suppertime," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" and "The Folks Who Live On the Hill") were not necessarily identified with her. Other highlights of the fine set include "Sunday," "Just You, Just Me," "I'm An Errand Girl for Rhythm" and the beautiful "Autumn Nocturne."
