Although Baccara scored just two U.K. hits and none in America, the duo's mainland European fame was vast -- so much so that 11 tracks spread across a superlative "greatest-hits" disc can afford to omit one of the duo's best-ever singles, "Parlez-Vous Français?," in favor of others that English-speaking listeners might never have heard of. Of course, "Sorry, I'm a Lady" and the trans-European chart-topper "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" are here -- how could they not be? So are "Koochie-Koo," the Swedish Top Five smash "Darling," and the stirring "The Devil Sent You to Loredo" (the duo's final international hit), all vivacious vamps that will be instantly recognizable to anyone who fell in love with Baccara's biggest hits.
And, though it is true that not every one of Baccara's biggies was instantly memorable (a flat rendition of "La Bamba" and "La Adelita" head that particular list), in the hands of regular songwriters Dostal/Soja, Baccara's Original Hits emerges everything that the duo itself was -- bright and bubbly, cute and kitsch, and oddly, even kind of sexy.
