Kevin Gates’s new album, The Ceremony, is hugely ambitious. At 38 years old, the native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana has delivered increasingly more imposing projects with unwavering determination. Of course armed with a feel for melody that we’ve come to expect from him, this time he’s mobilised it to its full potential. The proof lies in the tracks “Lil Yea” and “Letter 2 My Fans”, which, as the name suggests, is devoted to his loyal followers. Despite the hard outer shell, Kevin Gates allows complex feelings to pass through, his doubts and troubling memories. A certain violence is felt on the album, most notably on the tracks most inspired by the Atlanta sound, like “Healing”. Yet it’s definitely the South that dominates here. “RUMORS”, for example, one of the climaxes of this quite hardcore ceremony, seemingly ready to go to war, but it can’t be categorised as a simple gun show as we are quite transparently shown the contradictions that motivate its writer. The Ceremony is an expansive uncompromising record, certainly the most surprising and varied of Kevin Gates’s career. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
