With her second album My Everything, Ariana Grande already made a clean sweep of awards in 2014. Four years later, now 25 years old, she seems more comfortable than ever on Sweetener, a multi-textured pop album. The young woman, who had a tendency to lose herself in weeping lyrical musings, has found a new path on which she’s able to lay out her strong personality. Behind her angelic face hides a fierce predator, capable of venturing onto risky territories. She doesn’t appear unfazed by Pharrell Williams on their retro 90’s duo Blazed. Ariana Grande knows how to take her rightful place, even with the queen Nicki Minaj, who confronted her in a hip-hop test (The Light Is Coming). With REM and God Is a Woman, there is no longer any doubt. The young singer blurs boundaries and expands her musical field to the point of embodying a goddess. But the charm of Ariana Grande is the ease and humility with which she plays with her various facets. Kitsch and romantic, intense and funny, Sweetener is without a doubt the album that resembles her the most, by its fantasy, and the fact that she composed ten out of the fifteen tracks or so. As a confirmed singer-songwriter, Grande now joins the next level with a solid album, but not as experimental and scattered as her previous ones. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz

Nebraska: When Bruce Springsteen Laid Himself Bare

In 1982, at the height of his glory, the Boss surprised the world with “Nebraska”: a stripped back, entirely acoustic album; a timeless masterpiece bathed in echoes and reflections; an album that describes the fringes of America, and that many consider to be his best.

Tango: Sounds of the Río de la Plata

Rooted in dance and eventually becoming its very own artistic movement, the history of tango is an epic one; and its future truly looks limitless. A musical genre with hybrid origins, it remains one of the most incredible creations to come out of Río de la Plata. “It’s the only thing we don’t ask Europe for its opinion on,” wrote Argentina’s Macedonio Fernández, the man that young Jorge Luis Borges admired “to the point of devout and passionate plagiarism.” A number of coincidences in the late 19th century gave rise to this style of music. As musicologist Carlos Vega said: "no one really tried to create tango." And yet, here it is; complete with its own traditions and innovations, as well as its own golden age, ill-fated artists, myths and rituals.

Guns N' Roses, the greed justifies the means

As the sales of the legendary Appetite For Destruction approach the 20 million copies in the United States, who remembers today that it almost never saw the light of day? Not only the bonds uniting Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler were fragile, but fate seemed set against this band which seemed to be slow to catch on to Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Cinderella or Dokken. This is almost as a kindness that David Geffen had accepted to welcome this homeless band on his label. He would not regret his altruism…
