Seeking to increase passenger traffic on the seventeen mile rail route from St Petersburg to the terminus at Pavlovsk, the Tsarskoye-Selo Railway Company in 1838 constructed the Vauxhall pavilion, an attractive music and entertainment centre in the middle of a park. The station itself and the adjoining Vauxhall entertainment complex were modelled on London’s famous Vauxhall Gardens. The years following the pavilion’s opening saw the engagement of several notable conductors, and for 1856 the railway management was understandably keen to secure the services of Vienna’s leading dance music composer, Johann Strauss II. So successful was his initial “Russian summer” that Strauss would appear there for eleven seasons (1856-65 and 1869), thereby laying the foundation of his later considerable personal wealth. He conducted one final concert there in 1886. Many pieces were composed for the Russian seasons; these are the works chosen by Neeme Järvi for a new Strauss-album – and it is true that, with so many Strauss recordings available, it is a sound idea to find a new argument. Quite remarkably, Strauss has used several Russian themes, or at least Russian-sounding twists, even though this Russia is more imperial than popular. Some pieces also remind the listener that the composer had great success with Russian ladies, some affairs leading to slightly sorrowful reminiscences. All this, be it Russian or Viennese-Russian, is and remains great music. © SM/Qobuz
