Since Pond or Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Australia has experienced a psychedelic tidal wave. On the west side, in Perth, the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are now taking over. If the quintet formed around Jack McEwan (guitar, vocals) have not yet surpassed their elders King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, they certainly have all the potential to do so. After the excellent And Now For The Whatchamacallit released in 2019, which leered more into the hypnotic psyche of the early seventies, SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, beyond its capital letters and Gospeed You! Black Emperor-like exclamation mark, shakes things up by adding a seriously heavy component.
Written post-tour, during the COVID pandemic, this fourth album screams urgency with its cascading riffs, its ultra-massive drums serving as a rhythmic base, its distorted vocals and its more cut-up melodies. After the flowery, MGMT-like strings of Big Dijon, the explosive Tally-Ho and its power build-up is the best demonstration of this urgency, while the closing The Tale Of Gurney Gridman shows the group’s ability to seduce in slow tempos with minimal decorum. Elsewhere, Mr. Prism, Tripolasaur and The Terrors speak more to the stoners among us. Less lo-fi than its predecessors, SHYGA! solidifies PPC’s identity while declaring their will to box with the heaviest. Excellent. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz

Since Pond or Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Australia has experienced a psychedelic tidal wave. On the west side, in Perth, the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are now taking over. After the excellent And Now For The Whatchamacallit released in 2019, which leered more into the hypnotic psyche of the early seventies, SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, beyond its capital letters and Gospeed You! Black Emperor-like exclamation mark, shakes things up by adding a seriously heavy component.
