Samba Esquema Noise apparently caused a critical furor when it was released in 1994, but divorced from the Brazilian context of that time, it's a little difficult to hear why. If Chico Science & Nação Zumbi represents the modern mix side and Mestre Ambrósio the roots revivalist end of Recife's mangue beat school, Mundo Livre S/A essentially fills the slot of a fairly straightforward rock band incorporating elements of both. Mundo Livre is fundamentally a song-oriented quintet guided by the idiosyncratic vision of songwriter Zero Quatro, one of the chief instigators of mangue beat. The skanking guitar and reedy organ of "Manguebit" and guitar-driven "Homero, O Junkie" show off their rock fundamentals, while "Cidade Estuário" marries funky wah-wah guitar to horns and "O Rapaz Do B...reto" blends funk, folklore, and rock guitar. But Mundo Livre also breaks down those melodic songs by throwing in unexpected twists during closing codas, like the atonal piano swirls in "Manguebit" or the way the folkloric "Terra Escura" dissolves into atmospheric noise and "Saldo de Aratu" fades out with a lyrical guitar solo. The arrangements are cluttered and the sound somewhat lacking in clarity, but Samba Esquema Noise is still interesting, idiosyncratic modern Brazilian rock.
