The Foundations' live album, recorded at their late-'60s peak, was an odd affair that should have been done with more care. The audience noise is so incessant, and sounds so much more like a boxing match crowd than a music concert, that one suspects -- wrongly or rightly -- that the "live" aspect of the recording isn't totally authentic. Too, the lead vocals are often miked with an echo that makes them seem as if they might have been recorded in an empty tiled bathroom. However these tracks were cut, it's too bad they don't benefit from better production, as the Foundations play and sing pretty well. Oddly, it doesn't contain a version of their big smash, "Baby Now That I've Found You," though it does have performances of their two lower-charting follow-ups, "Back on My Feet Again" and "Any Old Time (You're Lonely and Sad)." Interestingly, however, over half of the songs weren't done by the band in the studio for Pye, including instrumental covers of Cliff Nobles' "The Horse," Bacharach-David's "The Look of Love," and Mel Tormé's "Comin' Home, Baby." The latter two in particular give the band a chance to stretch out soul-jazz chops that didn't figure into their pop singles, with some particularly groovy organ work. For the most part the album's only for completists, though, which makes it appropriate that the entire record is included on the three-CD Build Me Up Buttercup: The Complete Pye Collection.
