It’s already rare enough to hear Medtner’s music for piano, as it is relatively available in concert and on records, but his romances (in Russian) and Lieder (in German, of course), are extremely rare! And yet he composed over a hundred works for voice and piano; in this repertoire, the artists chose about half of the romances and Lieder, while remaining mindful to illustrate all of Medtner’s creative periods, from Three Romances and 9 Lieder after Goethe from the very beginning of the 20th century, to his Eight songs Op. 61, the last songs of which were composed in the composer’s last year, 1951. Most pieces borrow from Pushkin in Russian, and Goethe and Nietzsche in German: hence Medtner highlights his double family heritage − both Russian and German − and it’s true that his musical language undeniably fits the languages of the texts he sets to music. As for the style, the composer always was a bit of a maverick, without roots – until and including his exile to Great Britain – and free from any school or dogma. But granted he always remained faithful to the musical tones and modes of his origins in all his creations, it would be pointless to expect modernist touches, including in his music from the 40s, where the contributions of Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Prokofiev for the Russian part, and Hindemith for the German one, didn’t have any impact on his work. A parallel can be drawn, at least in that respect, with his contemporary, fellow countryman, friend and also exiled Rachmaninoff. The album is equally spread over the four voices: soprano Ekaterina Siurina, mezzo Justina Gringytė, tenors Robin Tritschler and Oleksiy Palchykov as well as Rodion Pogossov and Nikolay Didenko for baritone and bass.
