Certainly he was a great drummer, but, above all, Paul Motion was a great musician. With the aptly-named Motian in Motion, Jean-Marc Padovani pays tribute to him in a very beautiful way. Padovani was fortunate enough to work with Motian in 1996 during some recording sessions in Nimes, well before the America died in 2011… The question is, then, how best to celebrate Paul Motian and his Armenian origins, which he evoked in the majority of his recordings, be it on the saxophone or on the Occitan? The answer proposed by Jean-Marc Padovani is one of great musicality and a rare elegance: the saxophone(s) and the duduk (an instrument Didier Malherbe created for the Hadouk Trio) unite melodies that evoke both jazz and Armenian music, the rhythm section is always inventively robust (Claude Tchamitchian plays bass, Paul Brousseau plays piano, and Ramon Lopez the drums). It is a masterful tribute, but also a disc that plays on the styles of different borders, igniting an impressive creative momentum. © CM/Qobuz
