Let us remind the reader that The Queen's Six is a six-part, male voice a capella ensemble based in Windsor Castle, United Kingdom, living and working within the castle walls. There are worse places to work… Drawn from the ranks of the Choir of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, they keep a busy international schedule of concert and recording engagements. Their repertoire spans sacred and secular music from the Middle Ages to the present day. This new release covers Christmas carols and songs, mainly from the English-speaking realm – Vaughan Williams, Holst, Sullivan, Jacques, Tallis, the more jazzy Richard Madden and Thomas Hewitt Jones, and even Henry VIII who, between killing two wives and within these very Windsor walls, sometimes dabbled in music-making – but also a few from abroad, in particular the famous international lore by Praetorius (Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen) and the ubiquitous Silent Night by Franz Gruber and Jingle Bells by James Lord Pierpont, as well as some Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. The impeccable vocals of The Queen’s Six works miracles, both in the “serious” repertoire and in the more popular works, here presented in a highly polished polyphonic setting. © SM/Qobuz
