Since the mid 2010’s, Émile Parisien has been racking up the prestigious collaborations (Vincent Peirant, Daniel Humair, Michael Wollny) and ambitious personal projects (in the most diverse of orchestral configurations, ranging from the Louise sextet, to the Métanuits duo with Roberto Negro, as well as the quintet Sfumato), such that he has become not only as one of the greatest soprano saxophone specialists, but also one of the most influential figures on the contemporary European jazz scene. It is at the forefront of the quartet, which he has led for twenty years, where he truly showcases his most impressive talents. This quartet serves as a genuine laboratory for his poetic expressions, crafted alongside Julien Touéry on the piano, Ivan Gélugne on bass, and initially Sylvain Darrifourcq on drums, later replaced by Julien Loutelier in 2016. This dynamically organic quartet possesses a unique characteristic shared by all ensembles driven by a profoundly introspective musical philosophy: the ability to be instantly identifiable while continuously advancing their sonic landscape. This is absolutely the case for this new work, Let Them Cook, where, for the first time, these musicians add electronic music to their palette, not so much to follow a trend, but rather to explore the ensemble’s collective potential for expression.
Inspired by the acclaimed Wayne Shorter, whom they regard as a significant influence, they prioritize the narrative dimension of music. Their approach involves cultivating organic structures that evolve and acquire significance through a dynamic system of continuously shifting rules and devices, guiding and shaping improvisation. Émile Parisien has crafted a rich, lyrical musical style that blends technical prowess with emotional depth, resulting in an explosive aesthetic characterized by intricate orchestration reminiscent of jazz improvisation traditions. Their work reflects an unyielding appetite for experimentation and exploration into uncharted musical territories. A living, breathing work of art. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
