Having found fame as the guitarist in FFF, then becoming musical director to Johnny Hallyday from 2012 until his death in 2018, Yarol Poupaud also has some solo projects on the go. This second album picks up where the first (Yarol, 2019) left off: it’s a dazzling celebration of musical cross-pollination. In the first place, Yarol Popaud, brother of actor Melvil, is a fan of funk and rock. The rather macho titles of some of the songs attest to his dynamic, explosive temperament, which was made for live performances (BulletHot like dynamite…). Around clattering drums and groovy bass, Yarol Poupaud injects a dose of new wave (the sparkling synth on The Detonator), or a drop of hard rock (Chevrolet). The pressure eases off a little with the slow Comme la pluie (in duo with Lescop), and the dreamy Rio. These two tracks also show that Poupaud's heart sways between French and English – another facet of his taste for mixtures. Note that this arresting, fresh album was written during the musician's first solo tour, with the young keyboardist who accompanied him on stage, Victor Mechanik. © Nicolas Magenham / Qobuz
