Charismatic Australian artist John Butler has been around for more than twenty years now. Since 1998, Byron Luiters (bass), Grant Gerathy (drums) and Butler have found success and fame with their bluegrass, rock and reggae sound, embodying a certain Aussie pride. Their seventh album Home is particularly personal and reflecting of Butler’s character. The opening track, Tahitian Blue, with its rather folky tune, pop style, fairly standard guitar theme and banjo riff is a way for the band to spread some good vibes before getting to the heart of the matter. John Butler doesn’t waste any time after the opener. Wade In the Water is all about asking for redemption, then on Running Away Butler highlights his anxiety problems and touches on his feelings and refelctions. Relying on a subtle blend of rock and folk, halfway between country and blues, the album also features songs about family life, love and responsibilities. On the title track the trio even take an electronic, almost hip-hop turn without straying too far from their original style and identity. A successful attempt. Twelve songs with an original but varied sound which make us want to dive deeper into the band’s discography. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz
