Every time the star American rap producer Metro Boomin releases a new project, he always brings out the big guns. After the incredible Savage Mode II in collaboration with 21 Savage released in 2020, Heroes & Villains brings together heavyweights of the genre to pay tribute to the producer’s status: Future, Travis $cott, 21 Savage, Young Thug, A$AP Rocky and Gunna. What a line-up. However, Metro Boomin does more than simply deliver a selection of his best productions and watch big names bring them to life: these are powerful tracks, with variation and versatility. The monstrous bass on ‘Too Many Nights’, the soul sample on ‘Umbrella’, and the almost melodic drum machines on ‘All the Money’ all broaden the feel of this album, whilst retaining a great sense of refinement throughout. You can really sense a visceral desire to fight, a will to prove and confirm his status. This level of audacity is reserved for a few beatmakers who have every reason to be brimming with confidence. Heroes & Villains is perhaps Metro Boomin’s most complex project, as well as his most moving. And it might just be one of his best. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
