With Smokepurpp, Florida’s got something to say. Spearheading the SoundCloud rap scene, the Miami native has matured well since his debut in 2015. For his second album, Florida Jit, he teamed up with the boss of local productions, Ronny J, for 17 trap tracks filled with kicks (Ends, One Play...) that surround the rapper's almost adolescent voice. It’s a nice surprise, after he seemed to have botched his first album, Deadstar 2, a few months earlier. Admittedly, Florida Jit may not do much better commercially than the previous album, but Smokepurpp has managed to change it up a bit here, drawing from a wide range of influences. In addition to the excellent production, two other elements give the album its strength. Firstly, it’s the careful choice of collaborations, giving the likes of Denzel Curry (on I'm Him) and his good friend Lil Pump (on Off My Chest) the chance to add their touch without the album sinking into an indigestible stream of guests. Secondly, it’s Smokepurpp's ability to get to the point and not stretch things out too much, like on the track Florida Jit, which could have sounded like a clumsy blunder if it hadn't been shortened to sound, in the end, like an interlude.
