The big news on this 2023 Deutsche Grammophon release by trumpeter Pacho Flores and the unheralded Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería under conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto is the Concerto Venezolano of saxophonist/composer Paquito D'Rivera. The work was composed expressly for Flores, and though jazz-classical fusions have been D'Rivera's métier for some years, he has rarely outdone this one with its energy, complex narrative, and idiomatic trumpet writing. The work won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Classical Composition in 2023, and no doubt many listeners will be drawn to the album by D'Rivera's work alone. What makes the album a true standout, however, is that there is plenty more to hear, offering something of a state-of-the-art compilation of recent Latin music. Sample the opening Concierto de Otoño of Arturo Márquez, with hints of jazz peeking out along the way until they bloom into a full-fledged "Conga de flores" finale. Another attraction is the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, which many listeners will not have heard; it renders the Latin rhythms well, and conductor Prieto has obviously drilled them well and created a strong sense of ensemble with the brilliant trumpeter Flores. It is curious that this album does not show up on Deutsche Grammophon's website, for it is one of the label's most interesting recent releases.
