With each successive release, Enrico Pieranunzi is becoming one of Italy’s best and best-known jazz pianists. While the late Bill Evans influences him in a big way, Pieranunzi is no mere copycat--he uses Evans’s lyricism and economy only as a basis for his own graceful, melodious style. On this disc, Pieranunzi pays homage to another, far different master of the keys, the 18th-century baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti. In adapting Scarlatti’s sonatas, Pieranunzi doesn’t try to play them as jazz, but rather finds the common ground between these short masterpieces and his own modern idiom. In this fashion, he maintains the uniquely Italian flavor of the originals while interpreting them in a refined and personal manner.
