Matching the magnificent achievement of their earlier Elgar recordings, the Hallé and music director Mark Elder have turned in another glorious disc, this one featuring the composer's Symphonic Study Falstaff and Cello Concerto, along with his rarely recorded Romance for bassoon and orchestra plus the world-premiere recording of his Smoking Cantata. Under Elder's powerful leadership, the Hallé has grown from a failing provincial orchestra to one that can rival the best orchestras of the capital with a lush palette of colors, a richly upholstered sound, a smoothly polished ensemble, and a burning desire to prove its worth on the world stage. Here, its reading of Falstaff is robust and heroic with the occasional touch of silliness and sentimentality it needs to succeed. With German cellist Heinrich Schiff taking the lead, the Cello Concerto is deeply felt, but stoic, with a tone that combines tender resignation and touching melancholy. With principal bassoonist Graham Salvage, the Romance is sweet but sad, while with baritone Andrew Shore, the cantata is brief -- 42 seconds in total -- but hilarious -- the entire text is: "Kindly, kindly, kindly do not SMOKE in the hall or staircase." Though seasoned Elgarians may already have their favorite recordings of Falstaff and the Cello Concerto -- most likely Barbirolli's of the former and du Pré's of the latter -- they still owe it to themselves to hear this disc so they may realize that the Age of Elgar has not yet passed. Recorded in the studio, the Hallé's digital sound is clear, deep, and detailed.
