There must not be much to do with one’s time in Westfield, Massachusetts, because the local lads in Within the Ruins have honed their chops to a keen edge. The music on CREATURE is technically dazzling, the sound of Metallica’s MASTER OF PUPPETS played at twice the speed. Twisting solos wind rapidly through sheets of headbanging thrash guitar while precise drumming sets the tempo. The playing is whiplash-inducing even at its slowest, and on songs like opener “The Book of Books” and “Holy Mess,” it’s all a blur of raging fury--a stirring testament to the value of having time to practice.
